The Muskie action
on Vermilion has exploded in the past several years to an
unbelievable level. But the other good news is there is still little
pressure for fishing spots - so if you're into Muskie you should be
into Vermilion!!
DNR has been
stocking since 1985 - usually 5000/yr and has now gone to every
other year stocking since the population is doing so well.
A good number of
50"+ fish now in lake - largest reported is 56" in '02.
These are Leech
Lake Strain Muskies - Minimum length is 40" but DNR is looking into
a total catch-and-release policy to get the size to 48 or 50".
The 2002 Muskie
outing in July for the FRV Muskie Inc. posted their best results
yet. They beat 2000 by eight Muskie.
Fish tend to be
thicker & heavier fish than elsewhere - good supply of bait fish -
mainly sucker & whitefish
