The qualifying rounds of Simply Fishing's
Muskie Tournament are over. Three out of six boats staying
at the lodge qualified for Saturday's semifinal. Jason Long
and Dan Wojtusik caught a 41 on Wednesday in a downpour and
30 mph winds. Eight fish were boated total Wednesday. Tim
Widlacki and Jason Summers boated a 48.25 today and took top
fish of the day honors. John Campbell and Chip Porter boated
a 46 today as well. Six fish were boated today. Eight fish
were boated Thursday. Good luck to these three teams
tomorrow. David Swenson, a muskie guide here on Vermilion,
boated a 42" on Thursday and we wish him well on Saturday.
The other three teams staying at the
lodge all came oh so close. Yesterday Joe McCartin and
Spence Petros had a 53 with gills flaring at the boat in the
final two minutes of the day. Jim Saric and Tom Sullivan
came close in the final hour today with a 48 that had the
back end of a rubber bait! That on top of a non-qualifying
38" boated yesterday for Jim and Tom. Joe and John
Vandervalm had a 50" fish along side the boat today that
wouldn't bite, not once but twice. They'll get them next
time.
Bob Roose caught and released a nice
35" northern earlier in the week. Devon Smith caught a 19.5"
smallie the same day with Bob. Steve Bankers caught a 36"
northern this week. Ryan Groebner boated a 40 muskie early
last week. John Campbell while prefishing for the tournament
caught a 36" northern.
The walleye action was pretty good
while the wind was blowing. Some days the flats provided
good action and some days the deeper water did well. Ron
Schulmeister, who managed to survive getting struck by
lightning a week ago Sunday, caught a 22" and Jeff Otto
caught a 21".
May your pole always be bent! Dave
